About LogToDone

Built by a senior Netflix engineer who actually uses GTD. For people who want their productivity system to work, not become another thing to manage.

The Story

Hi, I'm Grant. I'm a senior engineer at Netflix where I work on identity and security systems that help protect the infrastructure powering entertainment for millions of people worldwide. I've been building web applications for over 10 years.

I'm also a GTD practitioner who got tired of every existing tool cutting corners or simplifying the wrong things.

So I built the tool I wanted to exist.

Why Another Productivity App?

Here's what frustrated me about the productivity app landscape:

  • VC-funded growth machines: Optimized for engagement metrics and DAU, not your actual productivity
  • Feature bloat: Add everything, perfect nothing, because you need to justify the next funding round
  • Data harvesting: Your tasks, projects, and goals become training data or targeting profiles
  • Vendor lock-in: Proprietary formats make it painful to leave
  • Methodology compromises: GTD gets watered down to fit a generic task manager template
  • Pay-to-win AI: Basic features locked behind premium tiers, with AI costs marked up 10x

I wanted something that actually implemented GTD properly, respected my privacy, and didn't treat me as the product.

What I Bring to This

Scale Experience

At Netflix, I work on systems that need to be reliable, secure, and fast. When you're building infrastructure that supports a global streaming service, you learn what really matters: simplicity, reliability, and getting out of the user's way.

I've presented at security conferences like BSidesSF on how Netflix approaches zero-trust identity systems. I know how to build things that work at scale without overcomplicating them.

GTD Practitioner

I'm not building a generic task manager and slapping "GTD" on it. I actually use the methodology. I've read the books. I've struggled with the weekly review. I've felt the relief of a truly trusted system.

Every feature decision is informed by real GTD practice, not a product manager's roadmap to hit growth targets.

Privacy-First Mindset

Working in security, I've seen how companies handle (and mishandle) user data. Your productivity data reveals everything: your goals, your struggles, your relationships, your career ambitions.

I built LogToDone with privacy as a foundational principle, not an afterthought:

  • Local-first architecture: Free tier works entirely in your browser with no server
  • Encrypted at rest: Your data is encrypted in our database (for paid plans)
  • Export anytime: One-click markdown export means you're never locked in
  • BYOK for AI: Bring your own API key - I never see your prompts or AI results
  • No tracking scripts: Privacy-friendly analytics only (Umami, self-hosted)

The Business Model

LogToDone is bootstrapped. No venture capital. No pressure to 10x year over year. No need to compromise the product to hit arbitrary growth targets.

Simple, fair pricing:

  • Free tier: Fully functional local-first app, no time limits, no nagging
  • Personal ($25/mo): Cloud sync + integrations + AI coaching (BYOK)
  • Professional ($50/mo): Integrated AI with optimized workflows (coming soon)

Fair pricing for real value. No tricks. No dark patterns. No sudden price hikes after you're hooked.

What You Can Expect

I'm committed to building a product that serves GTD practitioners for the long term.

My promises:

  • Methodology integrity: I won't water down GTD to appeal to a broader market
  • Privacy respect: I won't sell your data or change the privacy model
  • Fair pricing: No sudden price hikes, no removing features from lower tiers
  • Data ownership: You can export everything, anytime, in standard formats
  • Sustainable development: Building for 10+ years, not a quick exit
  • Open communication: Regular updates, honest about challenges, responsive to feedback

Who This Is For

LogToDone is built for people who:

  • Actually want to implement GTD properly, not just have a fancy to-do list
  • Value privacy and don't want their life's goals turned into advertising profiles
  • Appreciate well-engineered software that's fast, reliable, and doesn't get in the way
  • Prefer sustainable businesses over VC-funded growth machines
  • Want to own their data and aren't afraid to switch tools if something better comes along

If that sounds like you, I'd love to have you try it.
